Negroni

Perhaps the most perfect drink ever created, the Negroni hasn’t changed in its composition since its creation over 100 years ago in Italy. Sure, there have been plenty of riffs but it’s widely acknowledged that the original Negroni - equal parts gin, Campari (there’s really no other substitute), and red vermouth - is untouchable.

It’s becoming so popular these days that there’s even a dedicated week for the Negroni every year! For 2021, it’s June 7 to 11. The Negroni’s combination of booze, bitterness and sweetness can pack a punch - so take it slow. Now if you want to riff off a Negroni, there are many way to do it, but I’ve often seen people amp up the gin ratio so that it’s less sweet. At the end of the day, make it yours - but most of all, enjoy! xx

NEGRONI

1 oz Gin
1 oz Campari
1 oz Red Vermouth
Slice of orange peel for garnish

Place gin, Campari and red vermouth in a mixing glass. Fill glass with ice cubes and stir for 20 seconds. Strain into an old fashioned glass filled with large ice cubes. Twist a slice of orange peel above the liquid so the micro-juices from the peel spray onto the surface of the drink. Dunk the orange peel into the glass.

PS - You’ll notice I use a mixing glass instead of a shaker glass for this drink. Because the Negroni doesn’t contain fruit juices, it doesn’t need to be shaken. Besides, the act of shaking a drink makes the contents too cold (not to mention, dilutes it even before you pour it over ice!), which is not ideal as you’ll lose its delicate aromatic flavours.
