This instalment of Why Cities features my favourite city on the planet: Vancouver. Not only is it home, but it’s also listed in the Top 5 most beautiful, liveable cities on nearly every list you can imagine online.

So you can appreciate that when it came to finding someone who fairly represents this gorgeous city for this profile it was imperative I chose well.

Sophia Cheng, a born and bred Vancouverite, is a legend in Vancouver media - both in traditional and digital forms. She’s one of the few talents who can tread beautifully between the two worlds. An online personality test led her to the PR space which she has taken by storm for over 10 years, marking her as one of the most highly respected experts by her peers.

When I think of Vancouverites who have a good story and who I love spending time with, it’s Sophia. She’s also ridiculously humble in terms of her accomplishments but those in the know rely on her exquisite taste to help guide us to the next best thing.

So of all the places on the planet, why Vancouver?

Sophia Cheng: It’s home! I was born and raised here. My family is here. The air, the mountains, the rain, and the food. I love this city.

If there were three words to describe Vancouver, what would they be?

Sophia Cheng: Active, diverse, collaborative

Describe the average Vancouverite.

Sophia Cheng: I don’t think there is an average Vancouverite. That’s what makes us unique. However, there are qualities many Vancouverites might possess. For example, a love for the great outdoors, a good night on the town with friends, and healthy good eats. We mostly all own a great raincoat (no umbrellas needed) and know where all the hidden gems are for hiking and/or parking downtown.

If there was only ONE place or thing that visitors to Vancouver MUST see or do, what would that be - and why?

Sophia Cheng: Walk/run/cycle on the seawall. The seawall is such a beautiful way to take in all that Vancouver has to offer in terms of fresh air, views, and nature. And, best of all, you can get some exercise at the same time. There are also plenty of restaurants to visit after in the surrounding areas.

Where do you go to escape Vancouver? Why there?

Sophia Cheng: An easy and quick trip would be to Seattle or the Okanagan Valley for some wine touring. Of course, I need to give a quick plug to Sonora Resort, a client I work with, which is just 50-minutes away from Vancouver via helicopter. You totally feel like you’re in another world! For longer distances, Santa Monica, Hawaii, and Paris are favourites.

Where would you go in Vancouver to decompress or relax? Why there?

Sophia Cheng: I love a good staycation. My favourite is to book a night somewhere, such as the Fairmont Pacific Rim or Wedgewood Hotel, and enjoy a massage at the spa and relax in the lounge area. Also, just doing “nothing” one weekend is the perfect way to unwind.

If you could live anywhere in Vancouver where would that be and why?

Sophia Cheng: I would love to live in the Kits area and be right by the ocean and seawall. It’s nature at your doorstep, literally.

What is your favourite restaurant in Vancouver and why?

Sophia Cheng: I’m lucky enough to work with so many amazing restaurants in Vancouver. It’s hard to pick a favourite. I love Miku or Minami for elevated sushi, Do Chay for vegetarian, DL Chicken for fried chicken, and Giardino for its beautiful patio.

What is your favourite bar in Vancouver and why?

Sophia Cheng: Dachi! I’ve known Miki and Stephen for many years, and they are doing such wonderful things there with the sake and wine list. You also don’t know who you may bump into at the bar as it’s certainly a hot spot.

What is your favourite coffee house in Vancouver and why?

Sophia Cheng: Nemesis is one of my favourites right now. Even though I’m not really a coffee drinker, I can appreciate what they are doing. It’s centrally located near Gastown. They also have a good menu for snacks and lunch.

Do you prefer to take transit or drive a car?

Sophia Cheng: I prefer to drive. I often book my meetings pretty close to each other around the city, and it’s much more convenient with a car.
