There’s a spot in Victoria that made a big impression on me the last time I was there (20 years ago) and this recent time (a month ago). I blogged about it in a recent post and it’s the Ogden Point Breakwater.

It’s such a beautiful spot for a walk; for quiet contemplation or just mindless wandering. You can walk all the way out to where the lighthouse is and watch the big cruise ships sail by or a seaplane land. But for me it’s really the smell of the ocean that makes it magical. And in the spirit of full disclosure, it had been over 20 years since I returned to Victoria and so although I had an image in my mind of what the Breakwater looked like back then, I was fairly certain it would look a bit different now.

And it did seem different.

Maybe because I was so much younger then - it gives you a different perspective. Today, it seems longer and it now has paintings over the side walls. Or maybe the paintings were always there and I just never noticed them. I also didn’t recall seeing a lighthouse there before, but evidently it’s always been there.

It’s quite amazing how your ability to observe evolves over time. Things that never used to matter or interest you, suddenly become a focal point. I also liked that the walk forced me to put away my phone and actually look up and experience the world in real time - and not through a lens or a device.

I loved it and will need to do it more!
